On Christmas day the Queen topped the British TV ratings, as 7.6 million viewers heard her annual address at the end of a landmark 70 years of marriage. So I’m going to ask St. Mungo to step aside for a week to make room for Her Majesty : – )
The chicken (they don’t appreciate turkey in this house) needed another 10 minutes cooking to crisp up, so I joined the others in front of the TV in another great British tradition!
The Queen’s message in which the 91 year old monarch acknowledged Jesus Christ as her lifelong inspiration in these turbulent times was followed by the carol “It came upon a midnight clear” I was struck by how prophetic it’s poetic message was, speaking of of the two thousand years of strife and suffering when heaven’s love song has been drowned out by babel sounds.
The last verse especially caught my attention.
- For lo! the days are hastening on,
- By prophet bards foretold,
- When with the ever-circling years
- Comes round the age of gold
- When the new heaven and earth shall own
- The prince of peace their king.
- And the whole world give back the song
- Which now the angels sing.
After booking our airb’n’b in Glasgow we discovered it had the same address as the house we lived in for 19 years in Belfast – # 6 Kensington!!!
To get to the apartment we went through Kensington Gate, and then around Victoria Circle (Interestingly Kensington Palace in London has been a Royal residence since 17th century and is where the current headliner, Prince Harry lives.)
Circling back around (like Santiago in The Alchemist) to where our journey began, we see it is now time to enter through a Gate into the full experience of the Victory of Christ’s first (dying)work at the beginning of His second (living) work.
In a few days time Hilary will celebrate her 70th birthday here. 70 is the number for Restoration as Adam died at 930, 70 years short of the glory of 1000….the cubic capacity of the Holy of Holies that was filled with God’s glory on the completion of Solomon’s temple. (2 Chron.7) This foreshadowed the glory that would fill the latter temple:
‘The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘And in this place I will grant peace,’ declares the Lord Almighty” (Haggai 2:9).
The living stones that constitute this temple are those who acknowledge “The prince of peace their king” in anticipation of a time when “the whole world give(s) back the song which now the angels sing.”
The angel’s song to the shepherds “Peace on earth good will to men” inspired another song I was given a few years ago as we circled around to set foot on Irish soil again early one morning during the spring resurrection season. Here is a ‘duct tape’ version of a few verses from it : – )
P.S. I had just finished this blog when I noticed the word count happened to be 490. This struck a cord not only because 49 is the jubilee number, but because on Boxing Day I did a 5 K run with some friends. It was a circuit that took in ‘Circular Road’ (where C.S. Lewis spent his boyhood). The race number I was randomly given was 549. Then I remembered the day before I had purchased a bottle of ACV that cost 5.49.
5 is the number of grace, a witness I believe that it is God’s time to complete the circle of his purpose in the manifestation of the sons as a precursor to all of creation being set from from it’s bondage to decay and brought into the same glorious freedom (Rm. 8:21).
